A petition to bar New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani from attending the twenty fifth annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony has surpassed 70,000 signatures, placing more strain on the Democratic socialist to step apart.
In current days, Mayor Mamdani has pushed back against criticism from spouses and households of 9/11 victims who accused him of spouting anti-American rhetoric. One 9/11 widower, Giovanni Galante, began a petition to keep the mayor out of this 12 months’s ceremony with another girl who tragically misplaced her husband on the day of the assaults.
Galante’s spouse, 29-year-old Grace Catherine Galante, labored on the a hundred and fifth flooring of the north tower.
“We felt that having Mamdani there would show a disrespect to our family members because of the people he supports,” Galante said.
Despite receiving tens of hundreds of signatures, including those of other 9/11 households, some have questioned the rationale of banning the NYC mayor from attending.
Will Zohran Mamdani attend the 9/11 ceremony?
Mayor Mamdani told CBS New York he’ll “proudly” attend despite the backlash.
“I will proudly honor the families, the survivors, the first responders forever impacted by that horrific terror attack by standing alongside them at this year’s 9/11 commemoration, reaffirming that we will never forget the solemn day felt by all of us who call this city home and, frankly, by all of us who called this country home,” Mamdani said.
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum signaled it could not keep Mamdani from becoming a member of the remembrance.
“We have intentionally worked to keep the commemoration free of politics. Government officials from across the political spectrum have attended the ceremony simply to bear witness,” a spokesperson said in a assertion.
Petition organizers said they’ve requested the City Council for help retaining Mamdani away from the ceremony, which is set for next month.
The 9/11 remembrance ceremony has been attended over the years by many politicians from both sides of the aisle. They sometimes don’t ship speeches and stay in a designated space.
Why was a petition launched against Mamdani?
Petition organizers allege that the NYC mayor aligns himself with “anti-American” figures who do not absolutely acknowledge the weight of the tragedy on 9/11.
Concerns have been raised about Mr. Mamdani’s public positions, associations, and responses to rhetoric that many understand as hostile,” organizers wrote in the document.
It adds that the annual event symbolizes American values and “a clear rejection of the ideologies that contributed to such violence.”
Mamdani openly criticized what he called an “anti-Muslim sentiment” last year while on the campaign trail. It came as his opponent at the time, the disgraced former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, accused Mamdani of pushing “antisemitism.
Some supporters instructed the petition organizers have been being hypocritical, concentrating on Mayor Mamdani and not other political attendees who largely did nothing for 9/11 familes.
“There’s been mayors and governors for the past 25 years that really did nothing to help the 9/11 family members. They were never banned,” said Dennis McKeon, organizer of the 9/11 survivor group on Staten Island. “We lost 29 people in our parish in St. Clare’s; that’s how I first got involved. I think everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.”
How many people have signed the Mamdani petition?
As of Monday night, the petition has garnered more than 72,000 signatures.
