“I’ve spoken to quite a few people in television and nobody has ever experienced that amount of footage completely lost.”
Producer John Rushton had come back from the labs with unhealthy information – the footage was unusable. It meant Jessica Hynes – who performed Cheryl Carroll in the comedy – had to be introduced back from London where she had rushed to seem in a manufacturing of The Priory at the Royal Court Theatre.
Thankfully, the BBC and manufacturing company Jellylegs had been saved from spending a fortune as the manufacturing was insured “in the event of something happening”.
