Country music legend hospitalised after slurring speech | UK News
Country legend Ronnie McDowell was rushed to hospital after he alarmingly started slurring his phrases mid-performance during a pageant set in Pennsylvania. The 75-year-old Older Women singer was on stage at the Summer Solstice Music Festival in Oley on Saturday (June 21) when his speech out of the blue turned impaired, according to Nashville, Tennessee, radio station WKRN. McDowell’s tour supervisor informed the station that the nation veteran was “not making sense” after performing just “three or four songs” on his setlist.
Concerned for his health, the supervisor reportedly pulled him offstage to test if he was feeling okay, to which McDowell replied “No”. Believing he might be having a stroke, McDowell was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remained undergoing tests as of Sunday (June 22). His son, fellow musician Tyler Dean McDowell, kept fans informed via Facebook. “Just wanted to let everyone know — I made it to Pennsylvania.
“Ronnie Dean & I are in the room with Dad,” Tyler wrote. “He’s talking to us, and we’re waiting to do the MRI. As soon as I know more, so will y’all. Love Forever.”
McDowell’s tour supervisor also confirmed to Nashville’s ABC affiliate that the scare started three or 4 songs into his June 21 set when the singer started to slur his phrases and was “not making sense”.
Tyler later shared a second update, offering a bit of lightness during a frightening moment: “I brought Dad some Popcorners and a Kombucha (snacks he likes),” he wrote.
“Ronnie Dean brought his comfy shows, favourite brush, and Vietnam hat. Dad was very excited about all this — like a kid in a candy store. Figured y’all could use a lil’ levity.”
Still, the family is asking for space while they navigate the worrying situation. “I know you’re all concerned. I promise—no one is more worried than I am,” Tyler said in another Facebook post.
“Please understand, this is an incredibly stressful time, and right now, my focus is on my Dad. If there’s anything that needs to be shared, I promise—we will.” He added: “If you can, pray.”
A separate Facebook post featuring a photo of McDowell playing guitar simply read: “Please keep Ronnie in your thoughts and prayers. The Family is updating on their personal platforms.”
On his Instagram Story, Tyler Dean added: “Thanks everyone, for the love. I’m heading to Pennsylvania now—I didn’t go with them on this run. Seeing these headlines on social media is what I’ve always dreaded.
“It’s like a nightmare. Scans are in the morning. If praying’s your thing, I’d appreciate it.”
McDowell shot to fame in 1977 with “The King Is Gone,” a tribute to Elvis Presley, which went on to promote over 5 million copies.
He adopted it up with hits like Watchin’ Girls Go By, Personally, and the beloved Older Women.
