Pride and Prejudice scene axed to avoid | TV Shows
Netflix is said to be axing an iconic scene from the upcoming Pride and Prejudice remake.
The streaming platform is now telling the story, based on Jane Austen’s novels, with a new six-part series adaptation written by Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn.
The new show features Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin and BAFTA winner Jack Lowden as the central couple, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, while Academy Award winner Olivia Colman will play Mrs Bennet.
But it has now emerged that a popular scene, previously featured in the 1995 BBC drama, starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, will not be repeated.
In the scene, which according to an insider “got millions of women hot under the collar,” Colin, playing Mr Darcy, was seen emerging from a lake.
While the scene became a favorite among fans, it didn’t actually feature in the author’s 1813 story.
In their announcement earlier this year, Netflix said their series would follow the original text closely, reuniting existing fans with the timeless novel, while also introducing a new generation to Austen.
Writer Dolly, who won the National Book Award for her debut Everything I Know About Love in 2018, said, “Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it.
“Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudiceis the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.”
The series will start production in the UK this year, as Netflix executive Mona Qureshi said, “We are delighted to be sharing this beloved British classic with our global audience. Pride and Prejudice is the ultimate romantic comedy.
“Dolly’s fierce intelligence and enormous heart, twinned with her genuine love of the Austen novel, means she is able to bring new insights, whilst celebrating all that the generations of fans hold so dear.
“The caliber of a cast led by Emma, Jack, and Olivia is testament to this precious story being in the best possible hands with Euros Lyn and the team at Lookout Point at the helm.”
The Express US has contacted Netflix for comment.
