Black Sabbath’s bassist, Terence “Geezer” Butler, wrote a heartfelt essay for The Sunday Times, reflecting on his “57 incredible years of friendship” with frontman Ozzy Osbourne.

The rock icon handed away on July 22 at the age of 76, just over two weeks after Black Sabbath’s remaining efficiency collectively.

“I didn’t realize then that I would never see Ozzy again after that night,” the English rocker penned. Geezer and Ozzy, along with Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, shaped the enduring band in 1968, initially named The Polka Tulk Blues Band, then Earth, before finally changing into Black Sabbath in August 1969.

Geezer referred to Black Sabbath as “the most incredible journey of our lives.”

He shared that Ozzy confirmed up barefoot on his doorstep, which led him to say, “Okay, you’re in the band,” reviews the Mirror US. “To me, Ozzy wasn’t the Prince of Darkness – if anything, he was the Prince of Laughter. He’d do anything for a laugh, a born entertainer,” he wrote.

Despite Ozzy’s status as a “feral wild man” it didn’t overshadow the very fact that the late rockstar “had a heart of pure gold,” including, “If you were a friend in need, Ozzy was always there for you.”

The Black Sabbath bassist and songwriter reminisced about the occasions main up to their remaining efficiency on July 5, which began a month prior during rehearsals. “I knew he wasn’t in good health, but I wasn’t prepared to see how frail he was,” he confessed.

“He was assisted into the rehearsal room by two helpers and a nurse and was using a cane – being Ozzy, the cane was black and studded with gold and precious stones.

“He did not actually say a lot past the standard greetings, and when he sang, he sat in a chair,” he continued. “We ran through the songs, but we might see it was exhausting him after six or seven songs. We had a bit of a chat, but he was actually quiet in contrast with the Ozzy of outdated.

“The strangest part of that show was the end,” Geezer penned. “Normally, we would all hug each other and take a bow to the audience, but Ozzy was on his throne and we hadn’t thought that out. What do we do? Tony shook his hand, I presented him with a cake, but it was such a strange feeling to end our story like that.

“I want I’d had more time backstage with Ozzy, but needs are redundant now. As Ozzy used to say: ‘Wish in one hand and shit in the opposite and see which comes first.'”

“Nobody knew he’d be gone from us little more than two weeks after the ultimate show. But I’m so grateful we obtained to play one last time collectively in entrance of his beloved followers,” the 76-year-old wrote.

“I’m so privileged to have spent most of my life with him,” he concluded. “Of course, there are thousands and thousands of issues I’ll suppose of that I ought to have written, but how can I sum up 57 unbelievable years of friendship in a few paragraphs? God bless, Oz, it has been one hell of a experience! Love you!”
