A French court on Monday granted Nicolas Sarkozy, the previous French President, early release pending an appeal of his sentence in a marketing campaign finance scandal.
Sarkozy was the first former head of state to be imprisoned in more than half a century in the nation, sparking fierce debates nationwide about equity and judicial independence. He started serving his sentence on Oct. 21 at La Santé, a prison in southern Paris, after being convicted in September of conspiring to search funding for his 2007 presidential marketing campaign from the federal government of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, the Libyan former strongman.
His legal professionals submitted a request for an early release, pending an appeal of the conviction.
Sarkozy called his imprisonment a “nightmare” on Monday.
The former head of state appeared via video call from prison, donning a darkish blue jacket and surrounded by legal professionals, saying being incarcerated was “gruelling.” “It’s hard, very hard, certainly for any prisoner. I would even say it’s gruelling,” he said, however, including that prison workers had made “this nightmare… bearable.”
“The risks of collusion and pressure on witnesses justify the request for release under judicial supervision,” Prosecutor Damien Brunet, who requested that Sarkozy’s request for release be granted, said.
