James Harden for Darius Garland at NBA trade…

Just when the Clippers acquired some momentum, they made a major transfer? Just when they began profitable, they dealt one of their two stars? Just when they had been turning heads, they cut their Beard?

This may appear to be the most Clippers transfer ever.

But not so fast.

The Clippers’ choice to deal James Harden for Darius Garland on Tuesday is a good longterm transfer for a franchise that wants to look forward.

The 26-year-old Garland is 10 years youthful than Harden. He’s a two-time All-Star in 2022 and 2025. He may very well be a cornerstone of their future, which they’re clearly trying to reshape in the 2027 offseason.

The transfer advantages Harden, too.

It provides him a probability to win now alongside Donovan Mitchell,  and secure a contract extension that the Clippers weren’t keen to pull the set off on for a 36-year-old.

Unlike Harden’s earlier departures from Houston, Brooklyn and Philadelphia, this wasn’t an acerbic breakup coloured by strong-arming and bitterness. Rather, this was a mutually useful handshake for both events.

The Clippers desperately needed to get youthful after getting into this season with the oldest roster in NBA historical past, with an average age of 33.2 years outdated. Meanwhile, Harden, who’s one of the most lauded gamers in the league to have never gained a championship, will get a probability to play for a workforce that’s in fifth-place in the vast open East, as opposed to ninth-place in the very crowded West.

The Cavaliers gained 64 video games last season before being eradicated in the second spherical of the playoffs by Indiana. For the Cavs, Harden is a savvy vet with heaps of postseason expertise who may help them break the glass ceiling that has been impenetrable since LeBron James left Cleveland in free company in 2018.

As for the Clippers, they’re punting this season in hopes for their future.

But let’s be real, they weren’t going to win anyway.

Their 17-5 file following their 6-21 start was thrilling. It generated headlines. It was a feel-good story. But that they had already misplaced an excessive amount of ground to compete in a convention with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Victor Webanyama, Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant and Luka Doncic.

For the Clippers, this might appear like a step backward.

Garland, who’s averaging 18 factors, 2.4 rebounds and 6.9 assists through 26 video games, missed the Cavaliers’ first seven video games of the season while recovering from toe surgical procedure and has been sidelined since Jan. 16 because of an ankle sprain. Harden, meanwhile, has performed in 44 of a doable 49 video games, averaging 25.4 factors, 4.8 rebounds and 8.1 assists.

But this is the first of what will likely be many important steps the Clippers need to take to rebuild. They failed to make the playoffs in 2022 and they haven’t gotten past the first spherical of the playoffs ever since. Garland may not be at Harden’s stage now, but he has a lot of potential.

It was a good gamble, even though Garland’s contract is comparable to what the Clippers balked at giving Harden. Garland is owed $42.2 million next season and $44.9 million in 2027-28.

For the Clippers, the Leonard-Harden experiment just didn’t work. Leonard has been injured too often. Harden can no longer carry a workforce. The Clippers are trying ahead to 2027 and this is making ready them for their potential post-Leonard period.

Even though Leonard seems to be like an All-NBA participant proper now, he’s difficult. He has missed more than 200 video games since becoming a member of the Clippers in free company in 2019, as nicely as a number of playoff collection. Not to point out, both he and the Clippers are at present being investigated concerning allegations that a $28 million endorsement deal with the company Aspiration was used to circumvent salary-cap guidelines.

Leonard is under contract through the 2026-27 season. He’s still succesful of tilting the league to his will when he’s healthy. But in many methods, he’s a wild card.

By trading Harden, the Clippers made it clear that they’re making ready for what’s next.

This transfer was a step in the fitting direction for both events, giving both the Clippers and Harden a shot at the futures they want.
