Chinese President Xi Jinping assured U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday that only “very few” world leaders have been given tours of Zhongnanhai in Beijing.
Compared to the White House and the Kremlin, Zhongnanhai is a closely guarded compound for China’s ruling Communist Party, previously used by emperors in imperial China. Only a choose handful of world leaders have been welcomed past its partitions, with Trump turning into the fourth U.S. president to obtain an invite.
The assembly occurred on the ultimate day of Trump’s high-stakes summit in Beijing to focus on commerce and Taiwan.
Before strolling through the gardens and holding talks over tea and lunch, video footage exhibits Trump asking a translator to inquire if Jinping had invited any other world leaders to the gardens.

“Very few. We usually don’t hold diplomatic events here. Even after we started having some, it’s still extremely rare. For example, Putin,” Jinping said, to which Trump replied, “Good. I like it.”
Before Trump, Jinping had invited former President Barack Obama to Zhongnanhai in 2014.
Jinping and Obama reportedly spoke about fashionable Chinese historical past while Obama was given a rare tour of China’s synthetic, historically-significant island, Yingtai.
The first U.S. chief to be invited to the grounds was former President Richard Nixon during a historic go to in 1972, marking the first time a U.S. president traveled to China. Nixon met with Mao Zedong, founder of the People’s Republic of China.

Xi said he invited Trump to the gardens to thank him for his invitation to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in 2017, marking the first time the pair had met shortly after Trump first assumed workplace.
Jinping described Zhongnanhai to Trump as “the place where leaders of the [communist] party and the central government of China work and live, including myself.
“After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, we [the communist party] have been right here, including Chinese leaders: Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and so on.”
In 1912, Zhongnanhai was transformed into a compound for China’s president before Chairman Mao Zedong turned it into a political powerhouse after the communists won the Chinese civil war.
However, during China’s imperial era, Zhongnanhai was considered a place of reprieve for emperors.
Jinping boasted about Chinese history while showing off the grounds to Trump.
“In other places within this compound, there are trees that have lived to be over 1,000 years old,” Jinping told Trump, who later remarked to the Chinese chief, “Nice place. I like it. I could get used to this.”
