Man found with amnesia took advantage’ of those | TV Shows

A person recognized as Benjaman Kyle was found bare behind a Burger King in 2004 with no reminiscence of his past.

He was found in rural Georgia and claimed to be struggling from a uncommon kind of amnesia. He took the title Benjaman Kyle after being named BK John Doe in the hospital. After 11 years of not understanding who he was, Benjaman was recognized as William Burgess Powell, an Indiana local who went lacking in 1976.

Filmmakers Shannon and Eric Evangelista began working with William in 2014 to help him recuperate his identification. Their investigation, however, uncovered a doable like to a highly effective crime household, with Shannon and Eric claiming William “took advantage” of people who had tried to help him over the years. The story has now been launched as half of the new documentary The Many Lives of Benjaman Kyle.

The documentary options interviews with people who tried to help William while he was looking out for his identification. Nurse Katherine Slater, who seems in the show, once described William as “so sweet and clever,” but their friendship ultimately fell aside.

William lived with Katherine from around 2007 until early 2011, when he was still recognized as Benjaman. Katherine initially needed to discover out who he was so he may get his life back, but grew to become suspicious of William when he admitted he wasn’t in discovering out his real identification. Katherine also began to suspect William did not actually have amnesia.

When William moved in with Katherine, he took over her whole home, ordering catalogs on the web and doing odd jobs around the home. William even tore up the ground in Katherine’s bed room, which means she had to sleep on the sofa for 18 months.

Katherine ultimately had enough and in February 2011, she told William to transfer out. Days before the deadline for William to transfer, he requested Katherine if he may burn some of his outdated mail in the back yard. Katherine refused as William did not have a burn allow, but he began a fire anyway.

When Katherine requested William to put out the fire, he did not even look at her. When the fire went out, Katherine told William to depart immediately.

William was also helped by Josh Schrutt, a restaurant proprietor who gave him a job and offered him with a place to live. By 2015, however, Josh had also grown suspicious of William and puzzled if he actually had amnesia.

Filmmakers Shannon and Eric also raised their suspicions about William, claiming in the documentary he may not have amnesia. Instead, they alleged he had ties to a crime household in Lafayette, Indiana, suggesting this may have been linked to his 1976 disappearance. No public evidence has emerged linking William to any organized crime exercise and he hasn’t been arrested or charged with any crime.

Shannon and Eric spoke to The Express US about William’s conduct, with Shannon telling us the people who helped him “didn’t deserve that.”

She added, “These are people doing the things you want human beings to do to people that are down on their luck, helping. You want people to help people. You don’t want to live in a world where you can’t help people because you’re so afraid they’re just going to take advantage of you.”

Eric told us, “He took advantage of them and used them as part of his grift,” before including, “He would throw up roadblocks like he would with us. He would control the information, he would vet the clues himself so nobody would ever get very far.”

The Many Lives of Benjaman Kyle premieres May 25 and May 26 on Investigation Discovery, with episodes streaming on HBO Max.
