The ‘best period drama’ available right now on one | UK News

Steven Knight is a stalwart of British period dramas, having written Peaky Blinders, SAS Rogue Heroes, and A Thousand Blows. Now, according to solid member James Norton, his most current period drama is one of his best.

Alongside this, the Glossary Magazine listed the collection at no 1 in its piece “The 21 most captivating period dramas of all time to stream next”.

House of Guinness is Knight’s latest release, and in an interview with Radio Times, Norton said the script was “Steven at his absolute best, firing on all cylinders”.

“It’s the extraordinary story of a family who happens to be the inheritors of the biggest brewery in the world,” Knight told Tudum.

The SAS Rogue Heroes creator continued: “They’re young and are given the task of taking on this incredibly successful brand. The first priority is: Don’t screw it up. And the second priority is to make Guinness even bigger.”

Norton’s character Sean Rafferty is launched into the story as a lapsed Catholic from the south of Dublin now working for the Guinnesses.

“I have to say that until Steven Knight’s scripts came along, I hadn’t pictured myself doing a thick Dublin accent in mid-19th century Ireland,” the Happy Valley star told Radio Times.

Norton described his character as a man with a “weakness for love and sex”.

“He has these complicated relationships with women of high status. And while normally he’s cool and reptilian, he starts to fall in love and it terrifies him,” he said.

Alongside Norton, the titular foursome are Anthony Boyle (as Arthur Guinness), Louis Partridge (as Edward Guinness), Fionn O’Shea (as Benjamin Guinness) and Emily Fairn (as Anne Plunket, née Guinness).

The collection synopsis reads: “House of Guinness is an Netflix period drama following the Arthur Guinness family in the aftermath of patriarch Sir Benjamin Guinness’s death, focusing on the far-reaching consequences of his will and the struggles of his four adult children—Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben—to navigate the powerful, and often corrupt, Guinness brewery and their interwoven family feuds, set against the backdrop of 19th-century Dublin and New York.”

House of Guinness is now streaming on Netflix.
