Summer is in full swing, and ideas of Alaskans have turned to fishing. We don’t have any big ocean-fishing outings deliberate this 12 months, but the salmon and trout fishing proper around right here is fairly good, and fish is nice for you. We’re probably not big on catch and release, other than where there may be a legal restriction. We fish for the freezer, and we typically have a lot of fish in there.

On the varsity entrance: A Matanuska-Susitna Borough elementary faculty just closed. But there’s a silver lining: Free books for Mat-Su kids.

Hundreds of books eliminated from one of Mat-Su’s completely shuttered colleges are on their approach to local kids through a summerlong literacy project in Palmer instead of being despatched to the discard pile.

About 100 packing containers of books eliminated from the now-closed Meadow Lakes Elementary School and left behind by faculty households, lecturers, and the district’s other librarians got to Bright Lights Book Project volunteers earlier this month, said district spokesman John Notestine. They have been immediately built-in into the group’s new Summer in the Parks effort, Bright Lights officers said.

The effort is a component of a partnership between Bright Lights and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District that started last 12 months and retains books out of the shredder and in the neighborhood after they’re no longer needed in colleges, Notestine said.

There’s nothing better for a younger individual’s thoughts, or certainly anybody’s thoughts, than studying. Nothing. So, a repurposing like this might yield some great advantages for younger, growing Mat-Su minds. And, in a small neighborhood, nothing a lot goes to waste.

I’d like to also make some options for the borough high colleges. How about having the children read the Constitution and the Federalist Papers? Maybe assign Aristotle and Marcus Aurelius? Reading those as a younger man influenced me significantly, including in some methods that didn’t turn out to be obvious until I used to be a lot older.

Alaska Man rating: 5 repurposed books.

Here’s another great factor about our home in the Mat-Su: it’s summer season, and the farmer’s markets are opening up with heaps of recent local Alaska produce.

The Matanuska-Susitna Valley is Alaska’s top spot for farm-fresh summer season greens.

With summer season in full swing, locals can take benefit of the bounty, too. But where can residents go to discover Alaska-grown produce?

Starting now, residents can discover Mat-Su produce carried in Fred Meyer, Carrs and Three Bears Alaska places throughout the valley, local farm bureau officers announced this week.

But what about farm stands?

To reply that query, the Mat-Su Sentinel compiled a listing of Mat-Su farm stands and farmers markets that function domestically grown produce. This listing contains only stands or places with constant hours and dates throughout the summer season. Visit the listed web sites to double-check that the situation you need to go to is open before you head out.

There’s a lot of trading going on, too. Here on our Susitna Valley homestead, the one crop we’ve got in abundance is raspberries. Other of us domestically grow not only veggies but also honey. There’s a truthful quantity of bartering, and my spouse’s dandelion and raspberry wines are fairly in style; be aware that she can’t legally promote them, but an casual commerce among associates? That’s completely OK, particularly since we aren’t in a dry jurisdiction.

Alaska Man rating: 5 home-made raspberry scones.
