US president Donald Trump made some daring claims live from North Dakota as Fox News halted to issue a breaking alert on the issue. Despite Trump’s optimism when discussing the precarious scenario around the Panama Canal – which is at present managed by the Republic of Panama – he’s set to have an uphill battle forward when it comes to seizing it back for the United States.

Speaking to attendees at the dedication of the Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, Trump announced that China is attempting to take control of the waters, after Panama raised costs “by six times”. He said: “We had the Panama Canal, so we gave it away. The first thing they did? Do you know what they did? They raised the prices to the ships by four times, and they didn’t lose one ship. And then they raised it again, twice, and they didn’t lose one ship.

“All they did is make tremendous amounts of money for years and years. How stupid is that?”

He went on: “And now China is trying to take over the Panama Canal, and we’re not gonna let that happen, okay?”

But in a worrying – and embarrassing – second which Fox didn’t air, Trump claimed he had spoken to Theodore Roosevelt about the canal. He insisted: “I even had a conversation with Theodore Roosevelt. I said, ‘What did you think about the Panama Canal, do you consider that your greatest achievement? How do you feel about the fact that the Democrats gave the Panama Canal away to Panama for one dollar?’”

One viewer frightened: “‘I even had a conversation with a Theodore Roosevelt.’ And how exactly does this not have people screaming ’25th Amendment’?”

Another argued: “They had an AI generated Teddy Roosevelt and Trump spoke with ‘him’.”

Someone else said: “This is a sick, sick man. He lies and lies and lies and thinks he is God. He had a conversation with Theodore Roosevelt he says.”
