Fans of The Chase tuned in to watch a brand-new quizzing format on Thursday (July 16). Bradley Walsh returned to host the beloved quiz show, but with a twist. Instead of being in the ITV studios, the host and the Chasers had embarked on a worldwide roap journey in The Chase Around the World, along with six pairs of contestants. The gamers – mom and daughter Nicola and Maddie, sisters Kati and Amy, newly engaged couple Dilan and Emily, father and son David and Steven, pals Matt and Cerys, and father and daughter Ashwin and Nikita – had been set to take a look at their quiz data in a number of beautiful cities, starting in Rome.

Many viewers had been delighted by the new ITV format, with one particular person writing on X (previously Twitter): “It was different, fun and still nail-biting! Really enjoyed that!!” Another added: “I know it’s just started but I’m already loving it,” while a third said: “Can there be a second series please?” Someone else shared: “Just watched first episode of #thechasearoundtheworld in #Rome. Quite enjoyed it. Looking forward to episode two in #Barcelona,” studies the Mirror.

Meanwhile, other viewers did not fairly heat to the collection, as they felt it did not surpass the unique quiz show. One particular person said: “It’s a no from me,” while another wrote: “This is so slow and as soon as the woman started crying over the first wrong answer then that’s me out… had high hopes too but it just doesn’t work!”

Someone else felt that the format was too related to BBC favourites Race Across the World and Destination X, while another said that they had been “bored” just minutes in.

During the episode, the contestants answered varied questions and puzzles that led them to some of Rome’s most celebrated landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

At the end of the first race, it was father and daughter pairing Ashwin and Nikita who arrived at the Spanish Steps last, that means that they had to go head-to-head with Mark Labbett and Anne Hegerty. The contestants had been victorious, and had been therefore granted a place in the next spherical in Barcelona.

Host Bradley Walsh beforehand teased the new collection, saying: “I would describe it as The Chase… but around the world! It’s out and about. It was very different doing it on location, in these incredible places, instead of being in a studio. I’ve been locked in Elstree Studios for 17 years!

“The places had been unbelievable. I cherished it, I actually did, but then again, I wasn’t chasing around, actually chasing around, the cities we had been in.”

Revealing his favourite locations, the host added: “I cherished Rome. Rome was unbelievable. I’ve been there before, but I just cherished it. The opening of that episode was sensible, because we had the Colosseum in the back. It was a beautiful heat morning and I had to drive this little Fiat 1500 around Rome with a digital camera, so I actually preferred that.

“Then in Barcelona we shot in front of the Sagrada Familia, I mean, literally right in front of it, so we had this beautiful skyline with it in the background. That was amazing, really brilliant.”
