U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to retaliate against the European Union after accusing it of “robbing” the United States in commerce.
Trump made the remarks in a prolonged Truth Social post rant on Friday afternoon, where he threatened to place “a substantial tariff” on the EU. In the post, he famous how the EU fined U.S.-based firms Apple, Amazon, Facebook’s Meta and Google for billions in damages for alleged abuse of energy to monopolize markets, a transfer that Trump expressed contempt over.
Trump went on to threaten to levy extra tariffs on the EU after hitting the U.S. tech firms with huge fines, a transfer that specialists have warned will escalate transatlantic commerce tensions.
“The European Union is at it again and, as usual, taking direct aim at GREAT American Companies!”, Trump declared Friday in a prolonged Truth Social post. “After having fined Apple, for no reason at all, 15 Billion Dollars, Meta, 3 Billion Dollars, Amazon 2.5 Billion Dollars, and many others, we have just been informed that Google, a truly advanced and amazing group, has been fined yet another 1 Billion Dollars, without explanation. This brings the Google total to over 18 Billion Dollars!”.
Trump went on to accuse the Biden administration for exacerbating the issue, while accusing the EU of performing unlawfully.
“This illegal and highly discriminatory practice started at these high levels during the first year of the Sleepy Joe Biden Administration, but it’s not going to continue during the Trump Administration,” Trump claimed.
Trump went on to make his place on the issue clear, while threatening to retaliate against the EU for the motion.
“The United States of America is not a ‘PIGGYBANK’ for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!”, Trump declared.
“Please let this TRUTH serve to represent that we will immediately initiate a 301 Investigation into the practice of ‘ROBBING’ American Companies and, in turn, the American Taxpayer,” he continued. “The European Union will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct, which I have consistently warned them about. The penalties will be entirely reversed and, we anticipate, a substantial TARIFF to be placed on them at the earliest possible moment. Stay tuned! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Trump’s post comes a day after the European Commission announced that it fined Google €890 million, barely over $1 billion, for breaching its digital rule e-book.
“Our duty and obligation is to comply with the laws that our laws are fully respected,” EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera said in response to a reporter’s query about U.S. backlash to the choice.
In complete, the EU fined a handful of major U.S. tech firms—including Apple and Facebook’s Meta—€700 million, about $795,865,000—for breaching antitrust legal guidelines.
