Britain’s most senior farming couple had been visibly emotional as they mentioned a devastating alternative they had been compelled to take. Steve, 96, and Jean, 73, featured on tonight’s (July 28) instalment of The Yorkshire Vet spin-off, At Home With The Greens, which was first broadcast in 2024. The Channel 5 programme chronicles the pair, who have constantly favoured conventional approaches but are now exploring various methods to maintain their farm.

Yet proceedings grew to become poignant as the Greens mirrored upon the devastating second they had been pressured to half with their dairy herd. During its prime, Stony Brough Farm operated as a flourishing dairy enterprise, and while milking ceased long in the past, it stays a daily reminiscence for them, experiences Yorkshire live.

While standing in their former cow shed, Peter Wright noticed: “It’s been a while since you’ve had cows in here but I think you’ve still got some of the old equipment hanging up there. How lovely.”

Keen to study more, Peter enquired: “So what time would you get up to milk every morning, then?” Jean disclosed: “About half past five, every morning without fail – winter and summer. Come hell, store. Oh, blow. We were there. 2 o’clock in the afternoon we started again so we could get done for the night. We might get tea at 7:00, 8:00 at night time.”

Peter responded: “So they’re long days aren’t they?” Jean said: “Oh they were long days but there were good days.”

Regrettably, the farm’s milking operations ground to a halt in 2015 when, owing to a deterioration in Steve’s health, the pair had been pressured to make the heartbreaking alternative to half with their dairy herd.

At the time, Steve confessed: “I’m very heartbroken really but as you see it might be a bit much for me in winter.” While in tears, Jean continued: “200 years of being cows here.”

Having devoted themselves to their cattle for such a prolonged period, bidding farewell proved extremely difficult, and even eight years on, the recollection of that second stays uncooked.

Peter enquired: “Do you still miss your cows?” Clearly emotional, Steve responded: “Oh, yeah. I Miss Saddam Stanley.”

Peter interjected: “I think your family’s a bit emotional, aren’t you?” Jean broke down in tears as she admitted: “Yeah, we still are because, yeah, I don’t…”

The weight of emotion proved overwhelming for Jean, who could not full her thought. While their milking period could have drawn to a close, the Greens’ new calves now serve as the lifeblood of the farm, maintaining Steve and Jean occupied with the work they cherish.
