The Pentagon announced that it’s going to rename Joint Base Charleston, the biggest Air Force-run base in South Carolina, after the state’s late Senator, Lindsey Graham.

Graham, who died on July 11 from an aortic dissection, served for 33 years in the U.S. Air Force, including a number of years of energetic obligation service to the department as an Air Force lawyer both stateside and abroad. “Senator Graham’s lifelong devotion to the military was shaped by his own military service and his public service in both the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives,” Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink wrote in a July 27 letter to the Post and Courier.

Meink ordered Air Force workers and Joint Base Charleston to take “all necessary and appropriate actions” to start transitioning the ability’s identify to Joint Base Lindsey Graham, according to the outlet.

“His steadfast advocacy was instrumental in modernizing our military infrastructure and enhancing aviation security, ensuring that Joint Base Charleston remains as one of America’s premier military installations,” Meink wrote.

Graham was eulogized as a “swashbuckling” public servant and a “true American original” during memorial companies in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

Graham never married, but helped raise his youthful sister after the deaths of both his dad and mom while he was at collage. He grew to become Darline’s guardian, who was 13 at the time.
