Michigan Democrats Brace For Tectonic Shift In Key Senate Race (Image: Getty)
The progressive democratic Abdul El-Sayed gained the Democratic main for U.S. Senate in Michigan – displaying the growing divide in the social gathering.
El-Sayed, a 41-year-old progressive and former public health official, beat reasonable U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan‘s intently watched Senate main.
Early Tuesday night, El-Sayed’s supporters in Detroit’s Majestic Theatre cheered at the first batches of votes, before mellowing. Hours later, Stevens’ beforehand subdued partygoers roared as she narrowed the margin.

In November’s midterm elections, El-Sayed will face former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, who narrowly misplaced a 2024 Senate bid to Elissa Slotkin.

El-Sayed, who was endorsed by Democratic progressives including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York City congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is a former health official and campaigned on “Medicare for All,” halting army help to Israel, and marketing campaign finance reform.
The seat is pivotal to Democrats’ probabilities of flipping the Senate, and El-Sayed will face the problem of uniting a divided Democratic base after a bruising main.
Following his win, President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social: “Great news for the Republican Party. El-Sayed, a Communist loser who hates Jews and Israel, is the projected winner in his race with the Socialist. As usual, the Polls were way off on this one. She was not expected to do nearly as well as she did. Now, the Dumocrats crazy policies will only get worse!”
Sen. Chris Van Hollen, another progressive chief who endorsed El-Sayed, said the race “should be a wake-up call to the Washington Democratic establishment.”
“He was running against a lot of Washington insiders as well as parts of the Michigan Democratic establishment. And he won,” said Van Hollen. “That’s an incredible story.”
“Congratulations to him,” said Sen. Gary Peters, the Michigan Democrat whose retirement spurred the contentious main to change him. Peters had endorsed Stevens.
