The Drop: A Snowfall Saga brings Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons back into viewers’ lives, but Gail Bean and Isaiah John are clear: these usually are not the same people followers left at the end of Snowfall.
The new FX collection follows Wanda and Leon as they struggle to reinvent themselves in Nineties Los Angeles, where the rise of West Coast rap presents new potentialities and new issues. For Wanda, that means reworking years of habit and survival into ambition and access.
We spoke with Bean and John about Wanda’s starvation, Leon’s devotion, and whether or not their characters can ever actually outrun the past.
“What I discovered about Wanda’s ambition is what she’s willing to sacrifice,” Bean told BOSSIP. “A lot of this resilience has always been in her.” Bean pointed to a line Leon once said about Wanda on Snowfall, “One thing Wanda ain’t…is weak.” That strength takes on a different form in The Drop. Wanda is no longer merely attempting to survive habit and the devastation crack cocaine introduced to her life; she desires to construct one thing of her own.
“Wanda is fearless, but she is also tired,” Bean said. “She’s been through a lot.”
According to Bean, surviving the worst has modified Wanda’s relationship with concern.
“Once you have seen and gone through so much, then your fear starts to dissipate,” she said. “She feels that she’s seen it all. She’s seen the worst. She’s done the worst.”
In Wanda’s thoughts, Bean added,
“There’s nowhere to go, but up.” In this collection, Bean said the only factor left for Wanda to do is to be great.
Isaiah John Says Leon’s Love For Wanda Includes The Imperfections
Wanda’s reinvention unfolds alongside one of the Snowfall universe’s most enduring relationships: her difficult love with Leon.
John told BOSSIP he drew inspiration from older generations of {couples} who stayed together through huge challenges. “You just seen couples go through hell and high water and still stick together,” he said.

For John, that dedication displays a fuller understanding of love.
“Love is not going to be one thing,” he said. “It’s not going to be quote-unquote perfect.” He added that “even through the imperfections, you can still lend love and care for another individual outside of yourself.”
Can Wanda And Leon Outgrow Their Past?
Both characters also face the query at the middle of The Drop: how a lot ought to your past decide who you might be allowed to change into?
John said, “That’s solely up to us as individuals,” including that self-work is important to acknowledge the patterns people can fall into.
Bean agreed, saying the past can change into either an impediment or one thing useful.
“We evolve, right? We can expand,” she said. “It’s up to us to decide if we want to allow our past to be something that’s a hindrance and hold us back, or if we want to allow it to be a step stool and help lift us up.”
As for whether or not Wanda and Leon will discover their manner totally back to each other, particularly after that viral second where Dara put her bid in for Leon, Bean and John weren’t giving up any of that tea. “You gotta watch,” they teased.
Considering the whole lot these two characters have been through together, with love still lingering between them, we definitely will.
