CAs Election Worker Unions Get a TRO, CHIRLA Gets | Political News

On Thursday the SEIU and AFL-CIO, representing election employees throughout California, filed swimsuit against the Department of Justice in the Northern District of California, accusing the Department of Justice of “carrying out a series of efforts to actually or attempting to intimidate, threaten, or coerce election workers who aid others in exercising their right to vote,” and requested that a momentary restraining order (TRO) be entered to forestall the DOJ from trying to pressure them to segregate ballots from possible noncitizens and from “threatening” prosecution for what they take into account to be just doing their job. Of course, Norm Eisen’s outfit is representing Plaintiffs, which also embrace the NAACP and LULAC, two teams that not too long ago requested intervenor standing in the continued lawsuit in the Central District we have been reporting on all week.

Without calling for a listening to, and without the benefit of any responsive pleading from the DOJ, District Judge Trina Thompson, a Biden appointee, issued the requested TRO Friday night, saying that Defendants are “temporarily enjoined and stayed, including under 5 U.S.C. §705, from the following”:

  1. Defendants shall not threaten, intimidate or coerce state or local elections officers or employees to demand that they halt processing the ballots of any registered voter solely on the idea that the poll belongs to an particular person alleged by Defendants to be ineligible to vote;
  2. Defendants shall not demand that any state or local election official
    1. (i) take away particular registered voters from their statewide voter registration lists;
    2. refuse to issue ballots to particular registered voters; or
    3. (iii) segregate or in any other case not rely any ballots solid by particular registered voters for the November 3, 2026 General Election, solely on the idea that the poll belongs to an particular person alleged by Defendants to be ineligible to vote;
  3. Defendants shall not threaten state or local election officers and employees with legal prosecution for failure to comply with such calls for;
  4. Defendants shall not threaten state or local election officers and employees with legal prosecution for processing or counting ballots in the 2026 election in compliance with state and federal legal guidelines that govern election administration on the idea that a poll belongs to an particular person alleged by Defendants to be ineligible to vote.
  5. The Court additional ORDERS Defendants to inform any State, county, or any other local authorities to which any Defendant despatched a letter relating to the processing and counting of ballots in the 2026 election and any checklist of people alleged by Defendants to be ineligible to vote that the calls for and threats of prosecution to election officers and employees mirrored in that letter have been enjoined.
  6. The Court additional ORDERS Defendant U.S. Department of Justice to inform the Court of any pending search warrant functions, grand jury subpoenas, or other calls for to access election supplies or ballots pertaining to any checklist of people alleged by Defendants to be ineligible to vote, or compel testimony associated thereto.

Now, I’m not an attorney, but I’m skeptical that this lady has the authority to do many of the issues she’s purporting to do right here. Regarding quantity 4, Bill Shipley says, “There is black letter authority that a federal law enforcement officer can ADVISE anyone of the law and the possible consequences of violating the law. This judge is an idiot.”

And one way or the other she’s entitled to know about law enforcement exercise? I do not assume so.

Also Friday, across the nation, our outdated good friend Judge Boasberg entered an order in a separate case that the DOJ had to present CHIRLA (the California group PurpleState uncovered as being behind most of the group and funding of the anti-ICE riots in 2025) with the 20,000 checklist of “likely noncitizens” on California’s voter rolls so CHIRLA may see if any of its members are on the checklist.

Meanwhile, CHIRLA operated as a Los Angeles County Flex Vote Center on Friday, breaking legal guidelines regulating conduct close to polling locations in the method.

With these two rulings, and the whole lot that occurred in the Central District case this week, the Supreme Court’s gonna have to become involved. Soon.

(I apologize for the less-than-formal tone of this fast update; it is Friday evening and I’m weary of this week’s fixed lawfare, but needed to be sure our readers had the fast data.)
