Ludvig Aberg slipped down the leaderboard at the Players Championship, squandering a three-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s ultimate spherical and failing to secure the win.

Aberg posted a stable entrance 9, reaching the flip at even par with one bogey and one birdie. However, his spherical fell aside on the back 9 when he discovered the water on back-to-back holes.

The Swedish golfer was unable to convert yet another 54-hole benefit, finally ending tied for fifth at The Players Stadium course. It comes after Tiger Woods sparked Masters rumors after his non-public jet was noticed.

Paul McGinley, the 2014 Ryder Cup profitable captain, warned that Aberg wants to be mindful after his incapability to close out the victory at TPC Sawgrass, raising considerations about his capability to end strong in major tournaments. The feedback come amid experiences that Matt Fitzpatrick posed a somber query to Cam Young as spectators heckled him.

“Playing under pressure is a skill, like all skills in the game and not everyone is blessed with it straight away, sometimes you have to learn it,” McGinley commented on Sky Sports.

“It’s fair to say that Ludvig has to learn from this, it’s happened a few times now. That’s one time out of four that he’s closed a 54-hole lead but it’s not terminal. He’s blessed with an unbelievable to hit the ball, chip and putt, and a lovely demeanor, but playing under pressure is a skillset too.”

He added: “For the first ten holes, by my calculations including fringes, he was putting for birdie on eight of those, so it’s not like his game disintegrated. He was around but wasn’t making any putts, so he didn’t get any giddy up to get up that leaderboard and pull away from the field.

“So that’s inviting stress and when he had a probability on 11 that was a large second, because the fellows in entrance of him had not made birdie. At that stage he was two pictures forward and it appeared like he was going to go three with only a wooden into that par-5, and he blasted it proper.”

Aberg surrendered four strokes over eight holes, whilst Cameron Young and Matt Fitzpatrick were scorching the course in the group ahead of him and Michael Thorbjornsen, Aberg’s playing partner, who also tumbled down the standings after a quad-bogey on the fourth hole.

Aberg acknowledged feeling nervous entering the final round, but he allowed those nerves to calm. That’s one aspect McGinley suggested shouldn’t occur again.

“We all hit dangerous pictures in golf; it is half of enjoying skilled golf no matter how good you’re,” he continued. “Particularly under stress, we all hit dangerous pictures.

“But I really do feel that when you hit a shot as bad as his was and remember, it was 40 yards into the water, that invites gremlins into your head. That’s a red flag, you have to recognise that, the caddie has to recognise that, you’re shook to the foundations.

“That’s when you have received to go back to fundamentals, that was a time to go back to the simplicity of it. Instead of that, he went to the issue of it and took on a shot that no one else was taking on – which is making an attempt to drive that twelfth gap. In the last 5 teams, he was the only man to hit driver there.”
