This just in from the Scottish half of Alaska: The Highland Games shall be returning to the Alaska State Fair.

Well, now, that’s a temptation certainly, one enough to deliver the hardiest bristle-pated knock-kneed Highlander down from the moors to pattern a wee dram or two. Speaking of the Highlanders, most sportsball varieties are joyful tossing a ball around, and more energy to them. But Scotsmen throw freaking phone poles.

That’s a massive half of my ancestry, of us. These are the people that the Romans, after conquering most of Europe, ran across, went “Oh for the love of Jupiter and Mars, no!” And then they constructed a massive, massive wall.

Walls labored then, and they work now, as it occurs.

Also – it’s ATV season. I’ve had both of mine out, so far, just for short rides in our space. Lots of of us have them up right here, and, sadly, tons of of us don’t train the correct cautions.

Rounding a sharp nook on Fairview Loop Road in Wasilla, I watched in horror as a 4-wheeler shot across the highway and received t-boned by a full-sized pickup truck. I slammed on my brakes and jumped out to attempt and present support.

This sort of factor appears to occur all too usually. And, I’d level out, 12 is a tad younger to be jetting around on an ATV with no supervision. We see lots of of us on the paths, particularly those alongside the Parks Highway, and most are exhibiting lots of warning: Helmets, grownup supervision, and shifting at a accountable tempo. But it only takes a second’s carelessness to trigger one thing unhealthy.
