An Antiques Roadshow visitor was left surprised when expert Richard Price valued a manuscript she introduced in at a whopping five-figure price.
The visitor defined that the diary had been given to her father 4 a long time prior and had been saved in her mom’s attic.
She believed it to be the transcript of a diary written by a crew member of the Shackleton expedition aboard the Endurance.
The visitor informed Richard: “That was the famous expedition that got stuck in the ice and then the crew members survived on the ice for a number of months.
“They then made a journey within the lifeboats to Elephant Island and Shackleton and 5 others sailed to South Georgia as a rescue celebration and they acquired a ship to return and get the opposite males off.”
She added: “So all the boys truly survived the expedition which was unimaginable.”
Richard was clearly impressed, calling it a “phenomenal story”. He then urged the guest to get an expert to verify the authorship of the text.
Richard managed to come to a valuation without the verification, declaring: “I’m simply going to say off the highest of my head, £30,000.”
The guest was delighted and clearly floored by the eye-watering figure as she muttered: “Oh no. Oh no.”
Although the guest explained that she had gone to some lengths to protect the document Richard issued a warning about its storage.
“I do not need it back beneath your mattress or wherever it was earlier than,” he said.
The guest revealed it had previously been kept under her mum’s TV, to which Richard replied: “Under the TV? Getting heat! Look after it. You should go to Cambridge to let the true people work on it.”
