Antiques Roadshow has been conserving followers entertained for a long time by valuing visitors’ most prized treasures. The BBC show has now amassed a big following of followers who wait each week to see if cherished possessions are a hidden fortune or maintain no true worth.
Back in 2011, Antiques Roadshow visited Swindon Steam Museum, where one guest gave a weird response to her valuation that had ‘ever been seen’ on this system. Ceramics knowledgeable John Axford met with a girl who introduced a wonderful-looking vase, detailed with birds. She explained that the item got here into her possession when her buddy gifted her belongings as half of her transition to turning into a nun.
The guest explained: “I went to live with a friend of mine, who was quite a wealthy girl, and she decided to become a nun, get rid of all her worldly wealth and goods.”
John requested: “Is that what you have to do?” as the guest replied: “Yes, when you become a nun. So she left me a thatched cottage, 17 acres, and all of her goods in Hampshire.”
She went on to clarify that the vase was half of the furnishings left at the property and had at one level been used as a lamp, without any alterations to the fastidiously crafted vase.
“I didn’t like it”, the guest continued, “I think it was going to be stretched and spoiled”. The guest was then really helpful to get the item valued and determined to carry it to Antiques Roadshow.
John was impressed by the guest’s story and confirmed that the vase is a real Lalique design from France, made in 1924.
The knowledgeable identified the attractive budgies that embellished the vase and the milky-colored glass, “It’s a really pretty design” John commented.
He went on to worth the item at £3,500, leaving the guest shocked. “Never”, she exclaimed, “It would bury me. Pay for my funeral, won’t it?”
“I don’t know how to answer that”, John responded as the guest laughed, “But it’s true, isn’t it. It’s my insurance policy for my funeral.”
