A 51st State of West Illinois? Some Counties Are | Political News
It’s one thing that could occur in most states. Often, the state legislature is targeted on what goes on in the big cities of those states, leaving those in more rural areas preventing for legislative breadcrumbs. But in Illinois, it is more than just frustration at being ignored in the Statehouse in Springfield. Some residents have had enough, and they need out. Not by transferring, but by forming a new state.

Loret Newlin is the director of Illinois Separation. They are main the trouble in 11 counties and a number of townships to let voters determine if they need to break free from Cook County and kind a new state. The prime purpose: Those who don’t live in Chicago really feel they’re being ignored by state authorities and need to change that. Newlin said of the trouble:
“Our area is not taken into consideration when laws are being made. There’s definitely more focus on them, and the laws are centered to benefit Chicago and Cook [County]. There is a lot of area outside of Cook that should have been taken into consideration.”
The referendum course of is designed to assess if voters need to pursue the formation of a new state that can be made up of counties exterior of Cook County. The group is drawing on the method that is printed in Article IV, Section Three of the U.S. Constitution, the same course of adopted when West Virginia turned a state in 1863, though any such transfer would still require approval from the Illinois legislature and Congress.
Newlin described some of the problems that are driving the motion, such as a per-mile tax for drivers at the moment in the Illinois Senate that, if handed, would disproportionately have an effect on downstate rural residents, as properly as farmers and truckers. Newlin acknowledged, “We tried to defeat this in 2019 and succeeded, but as typical, they won’t take no for an answer.” Then there may be the SAFE-T Act, signed into law by Gov. JB Pritzker in 2021, which eradicated money bail and created a new system for judges to determine if defendants ought to be detained or launched while they await trial.

If this have been to occur, the people of those 11 counties and townships wouldn’t only take pleasure in having the wants of their communities paid consideration to, but there would also be a few other perks in it for them as properly. First and foremost, not having to deal with out-of-control Chicago crime. Homicides are down, and the homicide price is down, but the frequency of murders stays larger than it was before the pandemic. They would also be free of the ridiculous blue-state insurance policies of Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who at the moment has a 22 p.c approval score.
Of course, Pritzker is opposed to a divorce between Cook County and residents of other counties who have the loopy notion that their county issues too. A Pritzker spokesman has called the motion a “stunt” and said that it’s “not going to happen.”Â
It could not occur. But if it did, what are the probabilities that the new state can be purple?
