Democrats have declared that they are going to “not be intimidated” after armed Border Patrol brokers gathered outdoors a press convention being held by California Governor Gavin Newsom in Los Angeles on Thursday.
The brokers reportedly made one arrest outdoors the Japanese American National Museum in downtown LA, where the event was being held. It comes as Newsom announced that California will push forward with a proposal to redraw congressional maps in a bid to help Democrats win 5 more US House seats next 12 months.
Newsom’s press workplace shared a video on social media displaying a number of armed brokers, some sporting masks, outdoors the venue.
“BORDER PATROL HAS SHOWED UP AT OUR BIG BEAUTIFUL PRESS CONFERENCE! WE WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED!” Newsom’s press workplace wrote on X.
“TRUMP’S PRIVATE ARMY IS ILLEGALLY ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!! WE WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THIS WEAK LITTLE MAN!!!” the workplace added.
Witnesses told The Daily Express that they noticed at least one individual being arrested outdoors the building.
Newsom addressed the group who had gathered inside the venue, accusing US President Donald Trump of being behind the transfer.
“Right outside, at this exact moment, are dozens and dozens of ICE agents. You think it is coincidental? Donald Trump and his minions, Tom Homan, tough guy, decided, coincidentally or not, that this was the location to advance ice arrests,” he said.
Greg Bovino, the Border Patrol’s El Centro sector chief, told FOXLA that the brokers had been current to make “Los Angeles a safer place, since we don’t have politicians who will do that, we do that ourselves.”
US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem defended the actions of Border Patrol brokers.
“I don’t know what info they’d for that operation that they deliberate today but it was based on the investigative work that all law enforcement officers do for every single operation they conduct to make sure they’re getting harmful criminals off our streets,” she told Fox News.
Newsom on Thursday called for a November 4 special election to put the new maps before voters, who must approve them. California lawmakers must officially declare the special election, which they plan to do next week.
The move is in response to Republican efforts to pick up five seats in Texas. Democrats have so far stopped a vote by Texas lawmakers on a new map by leaving the state.
The Texas effort is being pushed by US President Donald Trump as the Republican get together tries to keep its slim House majority after the midterm elections.
