BBC Countryfile presenter Charlotte Smith visited the Wissington Sugar Factory 100 years after its first marketing campaign to see the method of making sugar, but she was soon left bewildered after one “horrible” discovery. As employee Stephen walked over to her with a jug of liquid that was a darkish brown color, her instant response was a disgruntled: “Oh Stephen.” After he positioned it in entrance of her, she confessed that it “was not what I was expecting at all”, before telling him it seems “horrible”.

She then questioned why it appeared all muddy, to which Stephen explained that it was due to including calcum hydroxide, a white odorless powder, and explained that it’ll “remove all the sugar impurities from the process”. Charlotte collected additional data and requested if it merely attracted “all the bits you don’t want”, to which Stephen told her: “Absolutely.”

When Stephen began to pour it from the jug into a beaker, he explained that you could possibly now see the sugar start to separate as it started to flip clear.
