A Radio 5 Live presenter “struggled to hold it together” as she announced her departure from the programme after 15 years on air – with Naga Munchetty now confirmed as her substitute. On Tuesday, it emerged that current Breakfast hosts Rachel Burden and Rick Edwards shall be standing down in December.
Rachel turned visibly emotional while breaking the news live on their programme this morning. Addressing listeners she said: “I have some news to share, with you, ah, I really need to try and keep it together. I said I’d keep it together! We (her and Rick) have been working together on 5 Live Breakfast for five years now, and I have been co-presenting this show for over 15 years.
“And I’ve beloved, I believe, nearly every single minute of it. But now we have both been pondering a lot in latest months about what comes next, and I assume how we meet kind of shifting priorities in our lives.”
Following the announcement that they would be departing the Breakfast programme in December, Rachel clarified that she would continue working at 5 Live and stressed that she was “never leaving this place”.
Posting the clip on their Instagram web page, Radio 5 Live wrote: “Breakfast hosts, Rachel Burden and Rick Edwards, announced this morning that they’ll step down in December.
“Naga Munchetty will become the new co-presenter of 5 Live Breakfast, taking the helm of the station’s flagship morning programme five days a week from January 2027.
“As half of the adjustments, Rachel Burden will transfer to current the weekday mid-morning programme, Monday to Wednesday 11-2pm, following 15 years on the station’s Breakfast show.”
The announcement follows news that Naga had departed BBC Breakfast after 17 years with the programme.
Naga is already well known to Radio 5 Live listeners, having fronted the station’s weekday mid-morning slot since 2021.
Speaking about her new role, she said: “I’m thrilled to be becoming a member of 5 Live Breakfast in January.
“Live news, great conversations and connecting with audiences are what I love most about broadcasting, and 5 Live does all of that brilliantly.”
