Beloved newsreader dies aged 58 from cancer battle as | UK News

Respected journalist and newsreader Tim Stoney has died at the age of 58 after a gruelling battle with cancer. The TV presenter, who boasts a 30-year profession on the small screen, including a stint at Channel Ten and ABC, handed away on Saturday (January 3), surrounded by his household. He is survived by his spouse, fellow journalist Mary Gearin, and their two kids, daughter Maggie and son Patrick.  

His doting spouse paid an emotional tribute to her husband on Facebook shortly before his death, where she explained her sudden absence. She started: “I’m not on socials much anymor,e but I figure it comes in handy right now as a virtual part for this man, Tim stoney.  

“The absolute best father his kids could ask for. Brought them up so I could gallivant, and in doing so produced two stellar human beings. A lover of words and wit and debate and travel and history and politics and sport and jazz and whiskey.  

“Fiercely loyal family member and friend. Journo, writer, teacher, media trainer, Demons ruckman, St Kilda fast blower, decent bat, the most dedicated basketball and athletics dad.  

“Fate is dealing a beyond-cruel card that could see this big fella leave a 6’5” gap in our hearts within a few weeks, but this post is to have a good time him while he’s right here. Love you eternally, Timmy.”  

The broadcaster carved out his profession overlaying news and sports activities at Channel Ten for three years. He then jetted to Melbourne to take on the position of news and sports activities reporter for SBS World News Australia, where he stayed for 4 years.  

Tim directed a movie about the lives of Indian college students in Melbourne while he labored at SBS. He also put in a five-year stint working at the ABC before touchdown a position with Radio Australia.

Across his huge profession, Tim reported live from the Beijing Paralympics, filed studies from the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and spent a 12 months working for China Radio International in Beijing.

Gen Brammall, News Corp’s Head of PR, had fond recollections of Tim from his days as a cadet back in the Nineteen Nineties. He said: “His self-deprecating wit and intimidating intelligence were hallmarks of a man who left a lasting impression on our newsroom.”  

An extra tribute got here from Kate McGrath, Stoney’s former Channel Ten co-host, who told Adelaide Now: “Tim was special. A gifted journalist and communicator, he was kind, curious, witty, had a great passion for sport and history, and just happened to look like a matinee idol. Above all else, Tim loved his family, especially Mary and his two children. I know his Ten News family all feel a great loss.”
