Tom Kerridge in major Labour U-turn as he rages | UK News
Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge has lashed out at the massive increase in business charges, which have been launched since the Labour Party took energy despite throwing his assist behind them prior to the General Election. The movie star chef, who owns 4 separate gastropubs in England, appeared on Tom Swarbrick’s LBC Drive show, where he told the host the new rateable tax quantity on his Coach restaurant in Marlow had risen from £50,500 to £106,000.Â
Explaining precisely how his and others’ companies are being affected, he said: “I’ve got four spaces, four pubs, and all of them are going up at pretty much, over 100%…(Where) the (treasury) relief comes in that’s…to help you get to that end number. So it’s…just softening the blow. It’s still killing you off in two to three years’ time. So the (relief) packages that are helpful, (they are) only helpful for a short period of time.”
“The end result is, for example, my Butcher’s Tap and Grill, which is a very small pub boozer in the middle of Marlow, does burgers, fries, sport on the telly – it’s not Michelin starred. It’s not generating huge revenues.
“If we weren’t in there, it is the type of pub that an owner-landlord would have lived upstairs, come downstairs work 70 hours a week, loving that sort of space.
“The rates of the minute are £50,000 a year. That’s gone up to £124,000 a year. So a £74,000 increase in business rates.
“Now, if you have been the proprietor of that business, and you lived upstairs, that’s all of your wages gone. Your rent is paid by dwelling on the premises.
“So many pubs operate like that, whether they’re small little town centre ones or countryside ones. Most operators and landlords live on-site. They make a little bit of money, maybe around £40,000 to £50,000 a year, if they’re lucky.
“The second the business charges have gone. That’s it. What’s the purpose in being open?” He fumed.
His remarks come as pubs, bars, and restaurants are bracing themselves for significantly higher bills from April, following the Government’s revaluation of taxes, five years after they were lowered during the Covid pandemic.
Prior to the General Election, he was one of 120 business leaders who signed a letter endorsing the Labour Party.
