Paul Lynde is best remembered for his recurring position as Uncle Arthur on the ABC sitcom Betwitched. He tragically died at the age of 55 of a suspected coronary heart assault on June 10, 1982.

The comic and actor was discovered lifeless by friends who broke into his Beverly Hills home after he failed to seem at a banquet a number of hours earlier. Alan David, Lynde’s long-term buddy and agent believed he had died of natural causes in his sleep.

“When he didn’t show up for dinner, his friends became concerned,” David said. “He didn’t answer the telephone or the door. So they broke in a bathroom window. They found him dead in bed.”

According to stories by UPI, Beverly Hills Police Lt. Bill Hunt said Lynde might need been lifeless for up to 24 hours when his nude physique was found.

“Nothing in the house was disturbed and there was no evidence of foul play,” he said. “Everything was intact and looked as it normally would look.”

Born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, in 1926, Lynde had no real expertise of show business. He attended Northwestern University in 1944, where he discovered theatre and impressed his classmates with his witty self-written monologues.

After he graduated, he moved to New York City and ultimately landed a big break in the 1960 Broadway play, Bye Bye Birdie.

Lynde reportedly stole the show as harried father Harry MacAfee and later reprised the position in the 1963 film model of Birdie, which led to elements in comedies such as Beach Blanket Bingo.

In 1965, he landed a recurring position as Uncle Arthur on the ABC sitcom Bewitched. “His personality was the same off-camera as it was on camera,” says Bewitched director Richard Michaels. “There was nobody really like him; he saw everything as a joke, and it made him a natural.”
