Apparently, some of us still haven’t gotten the memo that a high college volleyball sport is meant to be about volleyball, not a subject journey back to Jim Crow.
A Thursday evening matchup at Fernandina Beach High School in Florida has sparked an investigation after a mother or father reported a disturbing show of racism involving college students from the college. According to the Jacksonville Free Press, college students allegedly held up a Black child doll, made racial slurs, chants and gestures, and laughed while partaking in the offensive conduct. The state of affairs reportedly escalated after an Andrew Jackson participant was injured, when the Black doll was allegedly held upside down while college students made jokes.
It goes without saying that, the incident has prompted outrage, including from the NAACP, while Nassau County School District officers say they’re investigating the allegations.
“Racism has no place in our schools or at our athletic events, and every student-athlete and guest deserves to be treated with dignity and respect,” the district said. It said it’s also speaking with Duval County Public Schools and will take applicable motion based on its findings.
We want we may agree that racism has no place in faculties and athletic occasions but sadly, we’ve seen these varieties of circumstances a lot over the years. BOSSIP has beforehand reported on the ugly intersection of racism and high college sports activities, including the case of a Black soccer participant who was allegedly subjected to “Ebola” taunts by opposing gamers during a Pennsylvania high college sport. We’ve also lined the Georgia high college marching band controversy where college students appeared to spell out a racial slur during a soccer sport halftime efficiency.
High college sports activities are supposed to give children a place to compete, construct friendships and characterize their faculties. Instead, Black college students and athletes continue discovering themselves subjected to racial harassment while directors scramble to examine after the injury is already finished. A Black doll getting used as a racist prop isn’t innocent “school spirit.” It’s not a joke. And it actually isn’t one thing that ought to be dismissed as children merely getting carried away at a volleyball sport.
According to News4JAX, local religion leaders like Rev. Bernard Johnson have called a group assembly to show help to the households of the younger women who confronted the harassment.
“This is a time for us to come together, to show solidarity in supporting not only the young ladies that came over from Andrew Jackson, but also shed some light on things that have been going on in this neighborhood,” Johnson said.
Thompson said group members are searching for “accountability, responsibility, dignity, respect, and a public apology.”
If faculties truly need these incidents to stop, maybe “we’re investigating” wants to be adopted by penalties.
