Call the Midwife star Helen George has admitted she was left questioning her selections forward of a terrifying new TV position.

The Trixie Franklin actress, who joined the beloved BBC period drama in 2012 and has also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, is taking on a complete new problem in ITV collection Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters.

The new actuality show sees a host of celebrities battle the most feared sea creatures in an adrenaline-fueled journey in the Bahamas.

As properly as Helen, the solid contains Ade Adepitan, Sir Lenny Henry, Ross Noble, Dougie Poynter, Lucy Punch, and Rachel Riley.

Across 5 episodes, the stars will dive with a completely different species of shark, with each spherical including larger and more harmful breeds until they attain the final problem – tiger sharks.

In a new interview, Helen has revealed that she was terrified of sharks and had a phobia of placing her head underwater, after 15 years of avoiding doing so.

But she now needs to gain some confidence for her younger daughters, aged three and seven.

“I wanted to get more confident for them,” she instructed RadioTimes. “I was really terrified of the water, so I might be a bit embarrassed about some of the scenes!

“I’m an actress and I play other people’s vulnerabilities, so playing my own is always terrifying. I’m ugly crying, there’s no hair and make-up… it’s not glamorous.

“Now I’m thinking, ‘What have I done?’ I haven’t been ‘myself’ on screen since I did Strictly, and that was uncomfortable for me.”

When ITV first introduced Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters, Plimsoll Productions head of factual leisure Karen Plumb stated that the format would “blend conservation with wildly entertaining pop culture”.

“We’re constantly looking for innovative approaches to wildlife storytelling and are certain that our fish-out-of-water spin – delivering 50 years after Jaws – will transform the world’s perception of these critical predators before it’s too late,” she stated.

ITV’s head of leisure commissioning Katie Rawcliffe added the collection could be a “once in a lifetime challenge for some of the bravest celebrities out there”.

An insider beforehand teased that the collection isn’t one for the “faint-hearted”, with a source telling The Mirror: “The sharks they were free diving with were definitely dangerous and they were shocked when they realised what had happened to the expert, who’d had an arm and a leg bitten off.”

“There were no Great Whites involved in the making of this show,” they added. “But it was not for the faint-hearted, that’s for sure. Some were more scared than others.”

After filming the programme, Helen had described it as: “One of the most insane experiences of my life, learning about this incredible creatures, with equally incredible humans.”
