Oops! Canada might have thought they have been in the clear after Friday’s fracas over Ontario’s provincial authorities broadcasting an advert that includes a deceptively edited speech by President Ronald Reagan–in an failed attempt to make it sound like the previous commander in chief was anti-tariffs–and issuing a limpid apology from Premier Doug Ford.

As my colleague Katie Jerkovich wrote, the Reagan Presidential Library didn’t mince phrases – saying they might file a lawsuit – and rightly invited viewers to go to their YouTube channel to get the straight dope from the Gipper:

In response, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that his province would pause the adverts on Monday in hopes that commerce talks would resume after talking with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

President Trump, however, tore into the transfer in a post on his Truth Social account, writing in the first one: 

The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an commercial which is pretend, that includes Ronald Reagan talking negatively about Tariffs. The advert was for $75,000,000.

Here’s where the other shoe dropped, readers. It did not escape President Trump’s discover that Canada’s authorities allowed the advert of Reagan’s altered speech to air in prime time during Game 1 of the World Series.

“Canada was caught, red handed, putting up a fraudulent advertisement on Ronald Reagan’s Speech on Tariffs,” Trump wrote. “The Reagan Foundation said that they, ‘created an ad campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan. The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address,’ and ‘did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is reviewing its legal options in this matter.’

“The sole objective of this FRAUD,” he added, “was Canada’s hope that the United States Supreme Court will come to their ‘rescue’ on Tariffs that they’ve used for years to damage the United States. Now the United States is in a position to defend itself against high and overbearing Canadian Tariffs (and those from the remaining of the World as nicely!). Ronald Reagan LOVED Tariffs for functions of National Security and the Economy, but Canada said he didn’t!” 

“Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night time during the World Series, figuring out that it was a FRAUD,” Trump continued. “Because of their severe misrepresentation of the information, and hostile act, I’m growing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they’re paying now.
