CBS viewers say Tony Dokoupil torched his career | TV Shows

CBS viewers are satisfied Tony Dokoupil “torched his career” during his sit-down with Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, January 13, the CBS Evening News anchor questioned the president on a number of points, including the ICE taking pictures in Minnesota and America’s position in the Iranian protests. Throughout the exchange, Trump leveled quite a few allegations about the financial system and varied political figures, including Jerome Powell, whom he labeled as “corrupt or incompetent.”

While the president’s relentless accusations pissed off viewers, they sparked less controversy than Dokoupil’s failure to problem them. On X, one viewer wrote, “Tony went to CBS tonight to see your new gig. I was really surprised and disappointed that you did not challenge so much of the line of BS Trump fed you. We hoped for better than that.”

Another commented, “Tony Dokoupil @CBSNews, you made me lose all respect for you, allowing Trump to lie with no pushback.

“You know you actually made it when Trump is telling you how to do journalism. Way to torch your career, Tony,” a third remarked, alluding to a moment in the discussion when the host had inquired about the “Jerome Powell state of affairs.”

The Federal Reserve Chair is currently the subject of a criminal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, allegedly triggered by Trump’s demands for lower interest rates.

The anchor posed a question, “I do know you’ve got said you had nothing to do with the investigation, the felony probe into him. But you’ve gotten been criticizing him for most of the last yr. Even some outstanding conservatives argue that it seems to be a case of political retribution.”

In response, the president retorted, “And some outstanding conservatives also find it irresistible, so, you realize, you gotta point out them too.

Before launching into his critique of Powell, he subtly jabbed at Dokoupil’s new position on CBS Evening News, stating, “As you grow older in this position, you have to mention the other side.”

The anchor took over as lead anchor on January 5, 2026, stepping into the sneakers of John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois.

This is not the first occasion of viewer dissatisfaction with Dokoupil since he assumed the position. During his debut, Dokoupil encountered a number of technical points, main viewers on X to label him an “absolute train wreck.

One critic tallied “4 verbal flubs, a unhealthy transition, and a preloaded phase enjoying over the mistaken story” in less than a minute.

Despite followers’ opinions, he had already been half of the community for years, serving as the co-anchor on CBS Mornings since 2019. He also hosted The Uplift, a weekly collection highlighting optimistic tales for CBS News 24/7.
