Known as The Butcher of Plainfield, Gein was a Fifties serial killer and grave robber whose heinous crimes impressed legendary horror motion pictures like Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The actor chosen to painting Gein in the eight-episode sequence Monster: The Ed Gein Story is FX’s Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam, who seems fully unrecognizable in the newly unveiled trailer, stories the Mirror.

While audiences are accustomed to seeing Hunnam sporting his signature long blonde hair and outlined jawline, Netflix viewers had to look twice when they first glimpsed him as Gein.

Beyond being clean-shaven with short, slicked-back hair, Hunnam seems considerably thinner—a deliberate selection by the 45-year-old performer. Speaking to Tudum about his bodily transformation, Hunnam revealed: “I lost almost 30 pounds just to get a more malnourished, light frame.

“Ed was extremely lithe. And so that was a big half of the physicality. I spent a lot of time considering about where his power was, that he isn’t notably assured or, like, front-foot kind of power. How to not take up a lot of space, not to be type of entrance and middle and too assured in my physicality was actually important.”

These weren’t the only creative decisions Hunnam made when preparing for his portrayal of Geiman. His high-pitched voice in the drama was influenced by Gein’s unhealthy relationship with his mother, who expressed her desire for a daughter.

Hunnam further explained: “It was what Ed thought that his mom needed him to be. As she was actually his only human contact in the world, he developed this factor to attempt and make her love him.”

The Monster franchise is set to continue, with Netflix already giving the go-ahead for a fourth sequence.
