Cher reportedly responded by telling her husband that “there would have been no need to push” her because she was “gonna soar” anyway.
She revealed this conversation was the “darkest second” of their marriage, adding: “I don’t suppose for a minute that Sonny would have truly pushed me off the balcony, but I’m sure it crossed his thoughts, and he knew that leaping off had also crossed mine. What else may we do but snort?”
At one level, Cher thought of ending her own life while looking over a balcony in Las Vegas.
She recalled: “I stepped barefoot onto the balcony of our suite and stared down. I was dizzy with loneliness. I saw how easy it would be to step over the edge and simply disappear. For a few crazy minutes I couldn’t imagine any other option.”
Despite admitting she did this 5 or six occasions, it was the thought of setting a unhealthy instance for those around her, particularly her now 56-year-old son, that stopped Cher from harming herself.
The Strong Enough singer added: “Things like this could make people who look up to me feel that it’s a viable solution.”
Four days after her divorce from Bono was finalised, Cher married The Allman Brothers Band member Greg Allman, and they went on to welcome a son named Elijah before divorcing in 1979.
Meanwhile, Bono died after sustaining a head damage in a snowboarding accident in 1998.
