Classic detective series hailed greatest British crime | UK News

The “greatest crime drama of all time” is offered to stream for free now. Premiering in 1987, Inspector Morse introduced to life the veteran detective from Colin Dexter’s novels. Endeavour Morse, a senior officer at the Criminal Investigating Department of the Oxford Police, seems to be into legal circumstances with the help of his trusted co-worker, Detective Sergeant Lewis.

Each episode follows the duo as they examine advanced circumstances, which often hyperlink to secrets and techniques within Oxford’s social circles. John Thaw and Kevin Whatley star as Inspector Morse and Lewis respectively. The detective drama ran for seven series and an extra 5 specials before formally concluding in 2000. All 33 episodes might be streamed for free on ITVX.

The series sparked two spin-offs, including Lewis, which follows Morse’s companion. It ran for 9 seasons from 2006 to 2015.

The prequel, Endeavour, hit screens in 2012, operating for 9 seasons until 2023.

All three series are impressed by Colin Dexter’s basic novels, printed between 1975 and 1999. Several of the books obtained vital acclaim, cementing Dexter’s standing as an iconic crime novelist.

Before his death, Dexter gave his blessing to the prequel starring Shaun Evans because he imagine it would not replicate Thaw’s work. But he said no one else was allowed to play his beloved character in order to shield Thaw’s portrayal and legacy.

In 2018, Inspector Morse was named the greatest British crime drama of all time in a Radio Times ballot.

Celebrating the series online, one IMDb reviewer said: “My favourite detective series. Outstanding in quality. With Thaw came the elegance, personality – not 100% the precise character from the novels, no luckily John Thaw’s personal version of Morse. One of many fantastic things about this TV series is the fact, that the recipe was clear from day one. There is not one really bad episode among – impressive considering the many years, it took to shoot all the episodes. It is my favourite detective series, and it is simply one masterpiece after another.”

Another added: “I have all 33 episodes and all the books, and I think this crime drama is without question the best show that ever came on our screens. Each episode has a reason for watching it. They did change the character of Morse completely, but I don’t care. I prefer John Thaw’s Morse, he is somewhat more likable. The late John Thaw was an outstanding actor, and Inspector Morse is his best role. Great stuff! 10/10.”

“Inspector Morse is the greatest tv show ever made. Can never get enough,” echoed a third as another penned: “Inspector Morse remains, for me, the greatest TV show ever.”
