An exhilarating new tv collection is coming to Channel 5

Cooper & Fry is a detective drama based by Stephen Booth’s beloved novels and will characteristic Coronation Street and Downton Abbey star Robert James-Collier as local DC Cooper, alongside Doctor Who’s Mandip Gill as the reserved newcomer Fry.

Similar to the bestselling books, the programme follows the unlikely detective duo as they collaborate on a string of peculiar instances to obtain outcomes.

Cooper and Fry, which premieres on Channel 5 on Tuesday, November 18, will carry to life 4 of Booth’s earlier works including Black Dog, Dying to Sin, Blind To the Bones and Dancing with the Virgins. The collection unfolds in the Peak District, within the fictional city of Edendale, though filming really passed off in Dublin.

The cast also options Charlotte Bradley, Lorcan Cranitch, Barry O’Connor, Niamh McCann and Clara Simpson alongside Robert and Mandip. Here’s what we all know about the cast of Cooper and Fry.

A synopsis for the programme states: “Set in the mystery-shrouded Peak District, DC Ben Cooper (Robert James-Collier), an affable local, is thrown together with guarded newcomer DC Diane Fry (Mandip Gill), to investigate a string of mysterious deaths.

“Based on the bestselling novels by Stephen Booth, the 2 mismatched detectives must work together on a collection of uncommon instances to get outcomes. Despite Fry’s scepticism of local folklore, they will need to navigate not only the twisted paths of the instances before them, but also the shadowy beliefs that still maintain sway in the hills.

“As their personal lives begin to intertwine and past scars look to be healed, a unique friendship is formed. While Cooper and Fry unearth old rituals and beliefs, they must rely on each other to not only bring justice, but to survive.”

Robert portrays DC Ben Cooper, explaining his character: “He’s genuinely a nice guy. Ben has a backstory where he’s trying to find out who’s behind the horrific murder of his dad, who was a well-known police officer. I enjoyed playing that emotional element and adding layers to the performance.”

Audiences will recognise Robert from his stint as Liam Connor in Coronation Street, Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey, and Martin Evershed in Ackley Bridge. He’s also appeared in The Level, Fate: The Winx Saga, The Inheritance, The Long Shadow and Generation Z, plus movies including The Ritual.

Mandip takes on the position of Diane, a “very sharp, street wise, and by the book,” police officer who stays “sceptical” of the folklore Cooper has been raised with. Mandip explained about her character: “Her scepticism is what makes her and Ben so different, because when we first meet her she doesn’t buy any of the supernatural elements of the case. That isn’t because of Diane’s training or the crimes she’s worked on beforehand, it’s because it makes no sense to her.

“By the end of the collection Diane would not imagine in the folklore, she just understands the village more and how those tales are related to the group.”

Manip is best recognised for her roles as Yasmin Khan in Doctor Who and Phoebe McQueen in Hollyoaks. She has also starred in Doctors, The Good Karma Hospital, Suspicion and Curfew.

Charlotte takes on the role of Ben’s mother, Isobel.

Audiences may recognise Charlotte from her performances in Darklands, The Dry, Borderline, Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog, Proof, Titanic: visible injury and Steel and Artic Circle.

Lorcan embodies Detective Inspector Paul, the boss of Cooper and Fry.

Lorcan is most famous for his role as DS Jimmy Beck in Cracker, but he has had numerous roles across television including parts in Spooks, The Bill, Penny Dreadful, Fortitude, Atlantis, Death in Paradise, Magpie unlawful killings, visible injurylands, The Crown, Bad Sisters, Silent Witness, Blue Lights, and most recently Channel 4’s Trespasses.

Niamh portrays Tracey, a colleague of Cooper and Fry at the police station.

Niamh is known for River City, as well as for her roles in The Rainmaker, Sherlock and Daughter, The Listeners, The Teacher, and The House Across the Street.

Clara takes on the role of Juliana, a forensics expert who often assists Cooper and Fry in their investigations. Clara has had roles in Research Unit, The Reunion and Parlement.

Barry, who portrays Detective Sergeant Todd, has an spectacular appearing CV that consists of roles in Red Rock, Dublin illegal killings, Outlander, Shetland, and Game of Thrones, as effectively as a starring position in the movie Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves.
