Whilst Hegseth’s criticism of Biden and Obama may be expected given their opposing political positions, his rebuke of Bush could be seen as particularly contentious.

Trump’s interactions with former presidents became a topic of discussion on Monday after he claimed to have consulted one of them before his military action against Iran, asserting they had spoken on two separate occasions.

President Trump stated that a former president told him “I want I did what you probably did” – however, representatives for all four living ex-presidents have denied any recent communications occurred.

During a subsequent Oval Office appearance, Trump reiterated his claim: “I spoke to one of the previous presidents who I really like.

“I actually speak to some,” Trump said. “And he said, ‘I wish I did what you did.'”

When pressed by a reporter to establish which president, Trump refused to elaborate, indicating it wasn’t Bush before responding “I don’t want to say” when questioned about whether or not it was Clinton.

“I don’t want to say because a member of a party, a member of a party, they have Trump derangement syndrome, but it’s somebody that happens to like me, and I like that person, who’s a smart person, but that person said, ‘I wish I did it.’ OK, but I don’t want to get into who. I don’t want to get him into trouble,” Trump explained.

“You know, it’s interesting. And maybe he’d be proud,” Trump commented relating to the previous president. “And I could even ask him that: ‘Would you like me to reveal your name?'” However, Trump doesn’t seem to have communicated with any of the 4 former presidents.

An aide to George W. Bush informed NBC News “they haven’t been in touch,” while a consultant for Bill Clinton confirmed that whoever Trump referenced was not Clinton.

A spokesperson for Barack Obama said “no recent conversations” have occurred, and a source with data of the scenario indicated the previous president Trump talked about was not Joe Biden.
