Barstool’s David Portnoy believes that Bryson DeChambeau is “smoke and mirrors” when it comes to his public image.

“I think Rory can be like kind of a jerk and a baby, and I’ve sat next to him one time at a fight, so he was friendly to me, so I don’t want to be too critical. Rory can be a jerk, but I don’t think he’s worried at all about his public image or what people think. Bryson 100% is. Like, Bryson is a gigantic act, I think, you know.

“Everything about him is designed to, with thought of how people perceive him, whether he’s liked, whether he’s cool, whether he’s weird, whether his YouTube videos.”

Portnoy continued, noting that competitors within the sport is nice for the game as it grows. “So, I agree with everything that Rory is saying. I think you can be like Rory’s a jerk. Rory is a country club baby, steals the phone, he does this,” said Portnoy.

“So, listen, I like it. Like, I’d rather I like bad blood in golf. I like Bryson versus Brooks. I like Bryson versus Rory or whoever it may be. I like the speech.

“If you don’t like Rory, that’s fine. And he’s given you lots of reasons, by the way, not to like him with his behaviour. But I don’t think Rory is performative at all. I think what you see is what you get with Rory. I think Bryson is smoke and mirrors. Like he is trying to intentionally craft an image.”
