Donald Trump snaps back at Israels Netanyahu | Political News

President Donald Trump has hit back at Israeli chief Benjamin Netanyahu over his opposition to supplying F-35 jets to Turkey. During a press gaggle aboard Air Force One on Monday, Trump was requested what he thought of the Israeli Prime Minister’s opposition to the coverage.

“Turkey has been a great ally for me, I think he’s done a great job with Syria… Nobody tells me what we should be selling or not,” Trump replied, before including, “Turkey’s not a big fan of Israel, you know that right?”

He went on to describe the Turkish military as “tremendous,” and said they’re a “very big military. Very powerful country.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Trump met during the president’s go to to Ankara, Turkey, for the NATO summit, where they mentioned the U.S. offering weapons to Erdogan.

“We have discussed this before with the U.S. and were promised five jets. I know that Mr. Trump always keeps his promises,” the Turkish leader told journalists at the time.

To bring Turkey back into the F-35 program, it would need to satisfy a 2020 law mandating that a presidential administration confirm Ankara no longer possesses or operates Russian missile systems. It follows the U.S. 2019 suspension of Turkey from the F-35 program after Turkey objected to its purchase of Russia‘s S-400 missile defense system.

Turkey has repeatedly stated there is no conflict between the two systems and has previously proposed a commission to study the issue. It maintains that it has fulfilled its obligations on the F-35s and that its suspension was a violation.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, has voiced fierce opposition to any move to permit the sale to Turkey and has increasingly lobbied the U.S. against such action.

The Israeli leader stated to Fox News earlier in July that the sale of F-35s to Turkey would “upset the facility stability in the Middle East, which is finally assured by Israeli air superiority, and also by, I believe, by America’s posture in the Middle East”.

In a further conflict of opinion with Trump, Netanyahu also characterized Erdogan as “not precisely a model ally of the United States. He threatens to destroy my nation, the one and only Jewish state.” He additional described the Turkish authorities as “a regime that’s infected with the Muslim Brotherhood, which hates the United States.”

It comes as both Netanyahu and Trump are set to meet on Tuesday, which is the first time since the 2 leaders launched a joint battle against Iran.

While Netanyahu is up for reelection in Israel and can be eager to restore his deteriorating relationship with the U.S. president, Trump is under strain to end the unpopular Iran battle that has induced financial chaos and pushed costs larger in the U.S. forward of the midterm elections this November.
