Donald Trump has been threatened with impeachment for the primary time since taking workplace final month, with a Democrat taking goal on the US President for his Gaza takeover proposal.
US Rep. Al Green on Wednesday introduced that he would deliver articles of impeachment in opposition to Trump, saying “ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the President.”
“The movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring Articles of Impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done,” he stated.
“On some issues it is better to stand alone than not stand at all. On this issue, I stand alone but I stand for justice.”
On Tuesday, Trump proposed the US take “ownership” in redeveloping Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East” and suggested that displaced Palestinians be permanently resettled outside the territory.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” Trump stated.
“Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings. Level it out and create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area.”
He made the comments following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
Trump offered no detail about what authority the US would use to take the land and develop it.
His proposal was swiftly condemned by allies in the Middle East who have warned Trump that relocating Palestinians from Gaza would threaten stability in the region, expand the conflict and undermine the push for a two-state solution.
Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the international community should work to “alleviate the severe human suffering endured by the Palestinian people, who will remain committed to their land and will not budge from it.”
Last week, both Egypt and Jordan dismissed Trump’s calls to relocate more than two million Palestinians from Gaza elsewhere in the region.
Trump also said he would not rule out deploying US troops to support reconstruction of Gaza. He said he envisioned “long-term” US possession of a redevelopment of Gaza.
Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib accused Trump in a social media post of “openly calling for ethnic cleansing.”
