A pastor declared that President Donald Trump understood the Bible better than Pope Leo XIV.

Robert Jeffress, the senior pastor of the First Baptist Church, a megachurch in Dallas, Texas, with over 14,000 members, appeared on Fox News on Saturday to talk about the Vatican’s assertion about its “exchange of views” with Secretary Marco Rubio, who met with the Pope. “I think it’s commendable that the Trump administration is meeting with the Pope and trying to work with the Pope,” said Jeffress.

The pastor added that he believes Pope Leo is a good man who is honest in his religion, “but he is sincerely wrong when it comes to Iran.” Jeffress explained that the church and authorities had been created for two distinct functions.

“It looks like President Trump has a better understanding of what the Bible teaches about the role of government than the Pope has,” he added.

The remark was shortly blasted online by a number of people who accused Jeffress of being a half of Trump’s “cult.”

“Isn’t it incredible how quickly these right-wing Christians are willing to turn away from God and Jesus in order to throw their utter devotion behind a man who they see as their ability to make money and attain power,” wrote one individual. “We all know every single right wing, preacher, politician and media figure only follows Trump because of their desire to obtain power or money or ratings or a congregation aside from that they would switch allegiances tomorrow.”

Another individual accused Jeffress of being a “fake Christian.” Meanwhile, another said that Jeffress’s claims of Trump understanding the Bible better than the Pope “is the purest example of loyalty eclipsing theology.”

“It’s not a statement about scripture; it’s a statement about allegiance.”

Jeffress’s feedback come amid a largely one-sided feud between Trump and the Pope that got here to a head when the president called the pontiff “weak” on both crime and the issue of Iran having a nuclear weapon.

“I don’t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States because I’m doing exactly what I was elected, IN A LANDSLIDE, to do, setting Record Low Numbers in Crime, and creating the Greatest Stock Market in History,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post last month. “Leo should be thankful because, as everyone knows, he was a shocking surprise.”

Trump’s rant adopted the Pope’s criticism of the conflict in Iran, along with his feedback on the Trump administration’s “extremely disrespectful” treatment of undocumented immigrants last 12 months. In response, Pope Leo said he was “not afraid of the Trump administration or speaking out loudly of the message of the gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do, what the church is here to do.”
