A mom of two’s dream trip was “ruined” when she slipped on a boat and broke her leg in three locations. Shannon Hill, 34, deliberate a journey to Turkey with her husband – their first getaway since 2019.
The couple flew off with their youngsters – Dexter, 4, and Penelope, two – and Shannon’s mother-in-law, for a two-week trip in Antalya, Turkey, on May 6. The news comes as a household leaves US over ‘hostility’ over fears of raising ‘white supremacists’.
Shannon said the first week at the 4-star resort was all the pieces that they had hoped for on their first household trip. On May 16, they embarked on a pre-booked ‘pirate ship boat journey’. However, when Shannon went to the restroom, she slipped on an “unmarked” moist flooring and “heard the bone snap” in her decrease proper leg, reviews the Manchester Evening News.

Doctors later disclosed that her leg was fractured in three locations, necessitating surgical procedure to insert screws and a steel plate to rejoin the bones. She endured three days of pain in a Turkish hospital before flying back to the UK on their scheduled flight, with her leg in a solid.
Back home, she realized from NHS docs that the surgical procedure hadn’t been carried out the way in which UK docs would have accomplished it, and she needed another operation to ‘repair’ it. Shannon has had to relearn how to stroll and continues to expertise pain as she awaits her second process in December – after which she’s going to need “years of physiotherapy”.
The nightmare trip has left her with a worry of moist flooring and boats and too “freaked out” to plan another journey away. Shannon, a personal tutor, from Epsom, Surrey, said: “We thought the pirate ship boat trip looked really fun. But as I stepped into the toilet I slipped and my leg snapped.
“My leg was swollen and wonky and my husband had to carry me back up the steps. It turned out my leg was damaged in three locations and I also dislocated my ankle – it was agony. Back in the UK, I could not stroll for eight weeks – but it still hurts to stroll now and I can only put on flip flops. I’ll be off my toes again after my second surgical procedure and I’ll need physio for a long time after. It spoiled our first household holiday.”
Shannon had forked out £2.5k on the two-week family getaway. Everything had been running without a hitch until the vessel excursion which resulted in Shannon slipping on the slick surface near the restroom.
She said: “I heard my leg snap, and another man behind me said he heard it snap too.” Shannon’s spouse lifted her back up to the upper level but the family were told they had to remain until the conclusion of the boat excursion to seek medical attention as they couldn’t return to shore.

Five hours later Shannon was transported to the medical facility and scans showed the full scope of the injury. She said: “I used to be told I needed surgical procedure as the bone was utterly snapped and it might pierce a vein. They had to manipulate my leg before – I used to be screaming in pain.”
The next day brought Shannon’s two-hour operation with an epidural for the discomfort – which she described as “horrific”. She endured three nights in the hospital with minimal pain relief because of restrictions while nursing her youngest child.
Then on the final day, after voicing stronger complaints about her discomfort, she received pethidine – a powerful opioid medication used for pain management. Shannon said: “It virtually knocked me out – and then the next factor the doctor got here to discuss to me, and I used to be high as a kite.”

After her wound was cleaned and her cast replaced, she was cleared to fly home. She said: “When we went to A&E back home, my leg was so swollen from the flight. Then I used to be told the screws put into my leg in Turkey had been too long, and I’d need another surgical procedure to substitute them.”
Since then, Shannon has been attending weekly x-rays and scans to monitor her recovery. She couldn’t walk at all for eight weeks before she could finally start wearing a supportive boot. Now she’s back on her feet but can only walk for 20 minutes at a time before it becomes painful, and she can only wear a flip flop due to the swelling.
After her surgery at the end of the year she’ll have to go through the process again – and re-learn to walk for the second time with potentially “years of physiotherapy” to follow.

She said: “It was a nightmare and has left a bitter style in my mouth. It was our first holiday as a household of 4 and it was spoiled. I have never been on a boat since and even the thought of swimming provides me anxiety because of the moist flooring.
“It’s still painful for me every time I walk. I feel like I need a second holiday after the trauma of this one. But the thought of going away again freaks me out.”
The company that supplied the boat journey referred to it as “an unfortunate incident”. They said they provided to transport her off the boat utilizing a smaller inflatable vessel, identified as a Zodiac boat, but Shannon indicated her injury prevented her from boarding the boat. Once ashore, a consultant from the company drove her to the hospital in a personal car for treatment.
The company said: “They did not make any complaints and thanked us while leaving.”
