The captain of the 1995 Ryder Cup, Lanny Wadkins, has claimed the PGA of America ought to never return to New York after the chaos at Bethpage Black from an over-excited crowd.

“You know, you don’t see it here in Texas, that’s for damn sure. You don’t see it in Virginia, you don’t see it in California, and I haven’t seen any other places that I’ve been. And I dare say that when they play the Presidents Cup in Medinah, it won’t be that bad as well.

“Maybe it’s today’s people, but I know a lot of players of my age and generation just can’t believe what went on in our sport there.”

Wadkins is an eight-time U.S. Ryder Cup team member and eventually earned the title of captain in 1995. Tom Watson, the captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup in 1993 and 2014, also issued an apology for the fan behavior.

“As a former player, Captain and as an American, I am ashamed of what happened,” said Watson.
