Are endocrine disruptors dangerous?

The Endocrine Society found that musk ambrette, a fragrance present in certain detergents, perfumes and other products can be especially dangerous.

“Some rat research have shown that musk ambrette crosses the blood-brain barrier,” the report highlighted.

While Europe and Canada have restricted the use of the chemical and the FDA took it off from its “safe” checklist, it’s still current in many widely obtainable merchandise. 

“More research is needed to confirm our findings,” Shaw said. “But the ability of these compounds to stimulate key receptors in the hypothenalamus—the gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor and the kisspeptin receptor—raises the possibility that exposure may prematurely activate the reproductive axis in children.”

Experts urge mother and father to buy merchandise with warning

Early onset of puberty has also been linked to health issues such as breast cancer, diabetes and fertility points

“This study suggests that, out of an abundance of caution, it is important for parents to only use personal care products for their children that are federally regulated,” Shaw said.
