A first look trailer for a documentary about the late Jeff Buckley had followers “sobbing” when it was unveiled on Wednesday.

Just months after it was revealed that Buckley’s mom blocked Brad Pitt from portarying her son in a movie, a teaser trailer from Amy Berg’s upcoming take has been launched.

The trailer comes weeks after followers threatened to boycott the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic, but they appear more enthusiastic about the Buckely movie. According to a synopsis, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley options “never-before-seen footage, exclusive voice messages, and accounts from Buckley’s inner circle paint a captivating portrait of the gifted musician”.

Buckley, who only launched one album while he was alive, died in May 1997 at the age of 30 when he unintentionally drowned in the Mississippi River.

The trailer, which is just over two minutes long, options clips of Buckley talking, as effectively as performing. It also consists of an interview with his mom Mary, who even shares her personal voice message from Buckley. There’s also a few snippets of the musician speaking about his father, who was the singer Tim Buckley.

After watching the trailer, many followers admitted they have been already in tears. Posting in the feedback part on YouTube, one individual wrote, “Already weeping…thanks to all who made this doc become a reality. It’s a gift to us that cherish Jeff and his music.”

Another mentioned, “OMG it’s just a trailer and I’m already sobbing,” and a third commented, “Crying. SOOOO excited to see this. Beautiful.” And a fourth viewer admitted, “I shed a tear just watching this preview,” and another person added, “I’m already crying, just can’t wait to see him.”

Another fortunate fan commented, “I’m a music journalist and caught an early screening of this. It’s magnificent! And yes, you will need to have tissues on hand.”

And when the trailer was posted on Instagram, one fan wrote, “literally crying over this trailer, i can’t even imagine how i’ll be august 8th.”

Berg’s movie, which is set for release on August 8, comes months after it was revealed that Buckley mom blocked Hollywood actor Pitt from taking part in her son.

Pitt, who had invited Guibert to his 2000 marriage ceremony to Jennifer Aniston and to lunch at his Los Feliz home, initially obtained her blessing to make the movie.

However, Guibert later retracted her approval, expressing doubts about any actor, including the Fight Club star, portraying her son.

“If there’s 20 people calling you, and Brad Pitt is one of them, who are you gonna pick to go see?” Guibert informed Variety, reflecting on the high-profile curiosity in her son’s story.

She also questioned the feasibility of Pitt remodeling into her son: “We’re going to dye your hair, put brown contact lenses on those baby blues, and you’re going to open your mouth and Jeff’s voice is going to come out?”

Despite the project not shifting ahead with Pitt, he and Guibert remained in contact about potential collaborations.

Filmmaker Berg later confirmed curiosity in a Buckley project, but Guibert was hesitant, given Berg’s background in documentaries and this being her transfer to narrative movies.

Berg stayed true to her roots and created a documentary about him after his mom granted her access to his archives.

The filmmaker realized that the documentary format was the best means to share Buckley’s story and honor his legacy.
