The National Security Council said the text messages appeared to be “genuine” and it was reviewing how “an inadvertent quantity was added to the chain.”
Government watchdog group American Oversight on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against Trump administration officials involved in the group chat, including Hegseth, arguing they violated federal records laws by using Signal to discuss military actions.
American Oversight said it was seeking to “get better unlawfully deleted messages and forestall additional destruction.”
“The Federal Records Act requires federal officers to protect communications associated to official authorities business,” the group mentioned.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday instructed Fox News the incident was a “mistake,” adding that there was “nothing important” in the messages.
Following the leak, Democrats called for an investigation into the blunder, with Representative Chris Deluzio of Pennsylvania saying “heads ought to roll.”
“This is an outrageous national security breach,” Deluzio told Axios. “We need a full investigation and listening to into this on the House Armed Services Committee, ASAP.”
