Iran and Israel have been in conflict since approximately 1979 when a new theocratic regime in Iran took a stance against Israel. This, coupled with Israel’s concerns over Iran’s potential nuclear capabilities, has fueled tensions.

The situation escalated following the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks on Israel by Hamas, and Israel’s subsequent harsh retaliation against Palestine, further straining relations between Iran and Israel.

Tensions reached a boiling point on June 13 when Israel launched an attack on six cities, including Iran’s capital Tehran and a nuclear facility. The assault involved around 200 Israeli Air Force aircraft dropping 330 munitions on roughly 100 targets.

In response to Israel’s attacks, which Iran claims resulted in 78 deaths and over 320 injuries, Iran retaliated swiftly. They launched 100 drones towards Israel, followed by missile strikes.

Israel reported that fewer than 100 missiles were fired, with most either intercepted or failing to reach their intended targets.

The United States, a long-time ally of Israel, was drawn into the conflict on June 14 when Israel warned that the fighting could spread to American bases in the Middle East.

Fears of a nuclear war escalated when Iran suggested on June 15 that they might withdraw from the international Nuclear Peace Treaty. As strikes continued to be exchanged, Israel issued a warning on June 16, advising 300,000 people in Iran to evacuate as they hinted at a forthcoming strike.
