Furious BBC Newsnight row explodes as host forced to | UK News
Newsnight‘s Matt Chorley was forced to intervene following a row on Tuesday’s show. Joined by retired police superintendent Leroy Logan and Reform UK’s Laila Cunningham, the presenter implored his company to “stop talking over each other,” as a dialogue over the current protests in Southampton grew tense.
During the interview, Logan, a former superintendent for the Metropolitan Police, mirrored on the violent demonstrations close to Portswood Police Station, which have been held to protest the homicide of Henry Nowak on Tuesday night. A public gathering which escalated into violence, the demonstration noticed protesters throwing cans, bins and flares at riot police.
“Well, if anyone is telling me that when you run off your mouth to say ‘rage and white lives matter’ and this two-tier policing, which is not evidence-based at all, that doesn’t [have an] impact on people assembling outside a police station and then going onto other addresses, you’re fooling yourself.”
Describing the scenario as an instance of “cause and effect”, Logan added: “It is clear that people have been incited by what Nigel Farage and other people in Reform have said.”
Sparking a response from Cunningham, the Mayor of London candidate swiftly hit back, replying: “I find it remarkable that we’re sitting on a panel and we’re saying it’s the words that Nigel said that caused the anger of the nation and not what actually happened.”
As Logan tried to interject, Cunningham continued to make her argument. “We are sitting here discussing an anger that Nigel named, and somehow it is illegitimate to name that, to name people’s concerns and I’m being told that that’s what caused incitement. Did you watch the video?”
Telling Cunningham that he’d dealt with stabbings and investigated them immediately, Logan interrupted, “My issue is, you are conflating two issues.”
“No I’m not,” Cunningham returned. With the dialog growing strained, Chorley shortly took issues into his own fingers, instructing the 2 to stop speaking over one another as viewers at home would not give you the chance to hear them.
